At the heart of my efforts is a reason that keeps me motivated, keeps me going, even when I'm faced with setbacks and not enough hours in the day to finish what I need to finish. This is my true source of energy in life and it's one I'm very proud to tell all of you, my dear readers, about.
Parenting is never easy. It's what I always think of when I hear the expression, "The toughest job you'll ever love". That may not have been the original intention of the writer of that well known phrase, but it's an appropriate way to apply it.
Just like every other mother on the planet - my children are my life. They make my heart beat proudly and my soul smile like nothing else on Earth. Worrying goes with the territory as well. And when you have a handicapped child, one who will not be able to live independently or support himself, it is a worry that runs deep and never stops.
And so, in an effort to find a way to secure a happy and comfortable future for my son, and others in his situation, my husband and I have formed a non-profit organization, called T.A.L.L. That stands for Teaching the Autistic through Living and Learning. It is a Florida 501(c) (3) non profit, and we are both working quite hard to get this off the ground.
The mission, in a nutshell, is to build a residential and educational community for the autistic adult, which will be located in the state of Florida. It will be open to those living outside Florida as well.
The project is beginning to get attention, and we are firming up the plans for fundraisers which will begin in 2010.
We're glad to do this. For our son, and for as many autistic persons as we can help in the future.
